"The test will measure whether you are an informed, engaged and productive citizen of the world and it will take place in schools, in bars, in hospitals, in dorm rooms and in places of worship. You will be tested on first dates, in job interviews, while watching football, and while scrolling through your twitter feed. The test will judge your ability to think about things other than celebrity marriages, whether you will be easily persuaded by empty political rhetoric, and whether you'll be able to place your life and your community in a broader context. The test will last your entire life, and it will be comprised of the millions of decisions which, taken together, make your life--yours. And everything -- everything -- will be on it. I know, right? So pay attention!"

So if knowledge is a series of immeasurable moments that lead to monumental change than what is teaching? Is it the unloading of information from one receptacle to another one?

NO.

So if teaching is more than just standing and delivering to willing receptacles, what should teaching involve? I think it means actually getting to know your students as people. I think it means being human with them in return. I think it means saying, "I don't know, but let's find out."

To teach means to help a students craft their own webs of knowledge by acknowledging what they already know and seeing points of contact where new knowledge can be added on. I don't think that teachers should disappear from the classroom altogether. I think teachers play a vital role in students' construction of knowledge, but I would rather be a help than a hinderance. To teach means to connect with students in a way that fosters their creativity and "joie de vivre."

To teach means sharing with students and participating with them in the quest for more knowledge. I think teaching is just as much a part of the learning process as students. I'm a sharer and a large part of my teaching philosophy is tied up in that fact.

This class helped me see why I teach and give it a proper name and attribution.

Back to home.

Back to what it means to be human

Back to what it means to learn

Onward to so what?
